Tension rises ahead of elections in West Bengal, as the revised voter list is set to be released—putting the administration on high alert.
Ahead of the upcoming elections, the West Bengal government has issued special instructions to maintain law and order across the state. All District Magistrates have been directed to take necessary precautionary measures to control crowd and prevent any untoward incidents.
According to administrative sources, Superintendents of Police and Police Commissioners across districts have also been alerted. Copies of the directive have been sent to the Director General of Police and the Commissioner of Kolkata Police.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission is preparing to publish the revised voter list on Monday, March 23, across nearly 80,000 polling booths in the state. This updated list may include names of applicants who were previously marked as “under adjudication.”
It is important to note that after the publication of the final voter list on February 28, nearly 6 million names were placed under the “under adjudication” category. Out of these, more than 2.7 million cases have already been resolved, sources said.
However, as per Election Commission data, around 6.006 million voters are still under verification, with their documents yet to be fully processed.
The impact is most significant in border districts. Murshidabad alone has around 1.1 million such voters, while Malda has approximately 828,000 names under the pending list. A considerable number of voters in North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, and North Dinajpur are also affected.
The Election Commission has assured that no eligible voter will be excluded. However, final decisions will only be made after the verification process is complete.
Political analysts believe that this large-scale verification process could influence electoral equations, especially in border and minority-dominated districts. At the same time, some observers see this as part of a broader political strategy ahead of the elections.
Amid rising political tension, the first supplementary voter list is expected to be released tomorrow, drawing significant attention across the state.
As the elections approach, all eyes are now on the revised voter list—set to play a crucial role in shaping the political landscape of West Bengal.
