Dinesh Trivedi Likely for Dhaka? A Political Veteran in Diplomatic Spotlight
India may be preparing for a significant diplomatic shift in Bangladesh, with discussions intensifying over the appointment of a new High Commissioner in Dhaka. While there has been no official confirmation from New Delhi, the name of Dinesh Trivedi has prominently surfaced in recent reports.
Currently, Pranay Verma is serving as India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, a position he has held since 2022. Sources suggest he could be reassigned to Belgium, paving the way for a possible replacement.
Traditionally, such key diplomatic roles are entrusted to senior officers from the Indian Foreign Service. However, Trivedi’s potential appointment marks a notable deviation, as he comes from a strong political background rather than a career diplomatic track.
Dinesh Trivedi is a seasoned politician with decades of experience in Indian politics. He began his journey in the 1980s and served as a Rajya Sabha member from the Janata Dal between 1990 and 1996. Later, he joined the Trinamool Congress and became a close aide of Mamata Banerjee, playing a key role in coordinating with other political parties in New Delhi.
He went on to become one of the founding general secretaries of the Trinamool Congress and served multiple terms in Parliament. In 2009, he was elected to the Lok Sabha and was appointed Minister of State for Health, later becoming the Railway Minister of India. However, his tenure as Railway Minister ended after a controversy over a proposed fare hike, which reportedly led to differences with his party leadership.
Over time, his political alignment shifted, and in 2021, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). At present, he holds responsibilities related to the Parliament’s digital library.
Fluent in English, Hindi, Gujarati, and Bengali, Trivedi’s linguistic versatility is seen as an added advantage for a potential diplomatic role in Bangladesh.
Reacting to the speculation, Trivedi stated that if entrusted with such a responsibility, it would be a matter of honor for him, and he would strive to contribute to strengthening India-Bangladesh relations.
While the government has yet to issue an official notification, the possibility of appointing a political figure to such a crucial diplomatic post signals a potentially new approach in India’s foreign policy strategy—one that blends political experience with diplomatic engagement.
