Frequent Earthquakes Trigger Panic in West Bengal and Bangladesh: Is a Bigger Disaster Ahead?

Earthquakes have increasingly become a symbol of fear in Bengal, as repeated tremors continue to strike different districts. On Friday afternoon at around 1:10 PM, a strong earthquake jolted Kolkata and large parts of West Bengal, sending people into panic. The tremor was also widely felt across neighboring Bangladesh.

According to different monitoring agencies, the intensity of the quake varied by location. In some areas, the magnitude was recorded at 4.9 on the Richter scale, while in others it reached 5.5. The epicenter of the earthquake was reported to be in the Satkhira region of Bangladesh, near the India-Bangladesh border.

Strong shaking was felt in Kolkata, Howrah, North and South 24 Parganas, Nadia and Murshidabad. Residents rushed out of homes, offices and commercial buildings in fear. For several seconds, scenes of chaos were witnessed in markets and residential areas.

In Bangladesh, districts including Jessore, Khulna, Bagerhat and Satkhira experienced intense tremors. Minor damage has been reported in some areas, where cracks appeared in mud and semi-permanent houses. However, no confirmed reports of deaths or serious injuries have been received so far. Local authorities are currently assessing the extent of the damage.

The repeated occurrence of earthquakes within a short span has raised serious concerns among residents and experts alike. Over the past few days, multiple tremors have been recorded in the region, leading to growing fear about the possibility of a larger and more destructive earthquake.

The key question now being asked by the public is:

Are these frequent tremors a warning sign of a major disaster? Will another earthquake strike Kolkata and nearby areas soon?

Geologists explain that eastern India and Bangladesh lie in an earthquake-prone zone due to active tectonic plate movements. The recent increase in seismic activity suggests that aftershocks are possible, and the risk of stronger quakes in the future cannot be ruled out.

Authorities in both India and Bangladesh have urged citizens to remain calm but alert. Disaster management teams and emergency services have been placed on standby, and special monitoring has been intensified in coastal and border regions. People have been advised to report any damage, structural cracks or injuries immediately to local administrations.

Although the situation is currently under control, the series of earthquakes has left people anxious and uncertain—raising fears that these repeated tremors could be an early signal of a much larger natural disaster.
