India once again asserted their dominance in world cricket by clinching the T20 World Cup title with a commanding victory over New Zealand national cricket team. In the final played at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium, the Indian team defeated the Kiwis by 96 runs to successfully retain the prestigious trophy.
After winning the toss, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner chose to field first. However, the decision did not work in their favour as the Indian batters launched a powerful assault from the very beginning.
India got off to a blistering start thanks to opener Abhishek Sharma, who played an explosive knock of 52 runs from just 21 balls. His aggressive approach in the powerplay put immediate pressure on the New Zealand bowlers and laid a solid foundation for a huge total.
After Abhishek’s dismissal, the responsibility of building the innings was taken over by Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan. Both batters produced impressive half-centuries and stitched together a crucial partnership that kept the momentum firmly in India’s favour. Samson played a magnificent innings of 89 runs, anchoring the middle overs with a mix of power hitting and elegant stroke play. Kishan supported him well with a solid 54 runs.
Towards the end of the innings, Shivam Dube provided the finishing touch with a quickfire cameo of 26 runs off just eight balls. However, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav had an unfortunate outing as he was dismissed without scoring.
At the end of 20 overs, India posted a massive total of 255 for 5, setting New Zealand a daunting target of 256 runs to win the final.
Chasing such a huge total, New Zealand never really settled into the run chase. The Indian bowlers maintained relentless pressure and struck at regular intervals.
Finn Allen was dismissed for 9 runs, while Rachin Ravindra returned to the pavilion after scoring just one run. Glenn Phillips was bowled for 5 by Axar Patel, and Mark Chapman also failed to make an impact.
Wicketkeeper-batter Tim Seifert tried to steady the innings and fought back with a determined knock of 52 runs. However, his dismissal by Varun Chakravarthy near the boundary line effectively ended New Zealand’s hopes of a comeback.
Captain Mitchell Santner attempted to revive the chase with a fighting 43 runs, but he too was eventually bowled by India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah.
New Zealand’s innings eventually collapsed for 159 runs in 19 overs, handing India a comprehensive 96-run victory in the final.
Bumrah delivered an outstanding performance with the ball, claiming 4 wickets for just 15 runs in his four overs. His brilliant spell earned him the Player of the Match award. Axar Patel supported him with three wickets, while Hardik Pandya, Varun Chakravarthy and Abhishek Sharma picked up one wicket each.
For his remarkable consistency throughout the tournament, Sanju Samson was named Player of the Series, playing a crucial role in India’s successful campaign.
