Iran has confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a bomb attack at his office in Tehran. The government blamed the strike on the United States and Israel and warned of retaliation. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump acknowledged the operation. Iran has appointed an interim Supreme Leader, according to Reuters. The incident has sharply escalated tensions across the Middle East.

Iran has officially confirmed the death of its Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei following a deadly bomb attack at his office in Tehran, according to Iranian state media. The incident occurred early Saturday morning while Khamenei was carrying out official duties.

Government sources stated that several members of his family, including his daughter, son-in-law, granddaughter and daughter-in-law, were also killed in the attack. Tehran has blamed the assault on a joint operation by the United States and Israel, calling it a “cowardly act of aggression.”

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued a statement expressing deep mourning and warning of “the most severe retaliation in history” against American and Israeli forces. Iran has declared 40 days of national mourning and announced a seven-day public holiday following the Supreme Leader’s death.

US and Israeli Leaders Acknowledge Operation

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump both acknowledged that the operation specifically targeted Khamenei. Trump posted on social media that the incident represented “justice being served,” while Netanyahu stated that the strike was a “decisive action against Iran’s leadership.”

Iran had initially rejected the claims but later confirmed Khamenei’s death through official channels.

Regional Escalation and Retaliatory Strikes

Following the attack, Iran launched retaliatory strikes targeting Israeli positions and US military bases across West Asia. Explosions were reported in several locations, including Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. Heightened security alerts were issued in Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

As tensions intensified, multiple countries suspended commercial flights across large parts of the Middle East, citing security risks.

Interim Leadership Announced

Amid growing uncertainty, Iran moved swiftly to announce a new interim leader. According to Reuters, a senior cleric and deputy chairman of Iran’s Assembly of Experts, Arafi, has been appointed as the temporary Supreme Leader. He previously held top positions in Iran’s religious and educational institutions.

Political analysts view the decision as an attempt to prevent a power vacuum and maintain internal stability.

Senior Military Casualties Reported

Iranian authorities also claimed that several top military officials were killed in the same wave of attacks, including Defence Minister Amir Nasirzadeh and Army Chief Abdolrahim Mousavi. Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref ordered all government departments to shift to wartime preparedness.

The head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, warned that Iran’s response would be “unprecedented.” In reply, President Trump stated that any further Iranian attacks would be met with “overwhelming force.”

Global Concern

Khamenei’s death has pushed the Middle East into its most dangerous phase in decades. World powers are closely monitoring Tehran’s next moves under its new interim leadership. Diplomats fear that the conflict could escalate into a full-scale regional war with serious consequences for global security and energy markets.

Behind the Ceasefire: Why Did Iran Suddenly Soften? Pressure, Strategy, or a Larger Geopolitical Game in West Asia

Iran has not stepped back—it has repositioned. The ceasefire is less about de-escalation and more about strategic breathing space. In West Asia, silence often signals preparation, not peace. The real contest may just be entering its next phase.

After 13 Days of War, Iran Offers Ceasefire — But With Three Strict Conditions

Amid the continuing tensions in West Asia, new diplomatic developments have emerged as Iran has indicated a willingness to consider a ceasefire after nearly two weeks of conflict. However, Tehran has made it clear that any halt to hostilities would depend on three specific conditions being accepted by the United States and Israel. So far, neither Washington nor Tel Aviv has officially responded to those demands. On Wednesday night, Iranian President Masoud
