West Asia Crisis: Modi Steps Up Diplomatic Outreach, Holds Talks with Arab Leaders Amid Rising Tensions

National Desk : Voice of Calcutta

As the Congress questions the Union government’s stance on the escalating West Asia crisis, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has intensified India’s diplomatic engagement at the highest level. On Tuesday, he held separate telephone conversations with the Sultan of Oman and the Crown Prince of Kuwait to discuss the rapidly deteriorating security situation in the region.

According to sources in the Prime Minister’s Office, the discussions focused on the current conflict, regional stability, and the urgent need to prevent further escalation. Prime Minister Modi underlined that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable path toward resolving the crisis and called for an immediate de-escalation of hostilities to safeguard civilian lives.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reiterated that New Delhi has been deeply concerned since the conflict erupted on February 28 in Iran and parts of the Gulf region. From the outset, India urged all parties to exercise restraint, avoid actions that could aggravate tensions, and prioritize the safety of innocent civilians. However, the situation has worsened significantly during the holy month of Ramadan, prompting renewed diplomatic efforts.

“The conflict has not only intensified but has also spread across multiple countries. Casualties have risen sharply, infrastructure has been destroyed, and normal life as well as economic activity has been severely disrupted,” an MEA spokesperson said in a statement.

The spokesperson emphasized that India has vital strategic and economic interests linked to the stability of West Asia. Nearly ten million Indian citizens live and work across the Gulf and surrounding regions, making their safety and welfare a top priority for the government.

“We cannot remain indifferent to any development that may adversely affect Indian nationals abroad,” the spokesperson said.

India’s energy security and trade routes are also heavily dependent on West Asia. Officials warned that any major disruption in the region could have a direct and serious impact on the Indian economy, particularly in terms of oil supplies and maritime commerce.

New Delhi has also strongly condemned recent attacks on commercial shipping in conflict-affected waters. Reports indicate that several Indian nationals have been killed or gone missing in these incidents, further heightening India’s concern.

Indian embassies and consulates in affected countries are maintaining constant contact with local Indian communities. Travel advisories are being issued when necessary, and all possible consular assistance is being provided to stranded citizens. The MEA confirmed that diplomatic missions will continue to remain fully operational to handle emergency situations.

India is simultaneously engaging with regional governments and key international partners to explore diplomatic solutions. Prime Minister Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar have held multiple conversations with their counterparts to coordinate responses and share assessments of the evolving crisis.

The central government has made it clear that it is closely monitoring developments and will take all necessary steps to protect national interests and ensure the safety of Indian citizens abroad.

“The situation is under constant review. Decisions will be taken in accordance with India’s national interest and humanitarian responsibilities,” the statement concluded.
