Amid widespread controversy and partial revisions under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, the Election Commission is set to publish West Bengal’s final voter list on February 28. However, uncertainty continues over whether more than six million voters will finally remain on the rolls.
According to official sources, while the draft electoral roll included nearly 70.8 million voters, the status of a large section of names remains unclear due to multiple classifications and verification issues.
West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Agarwal stated that the names included in the draft list will be carried forward into the final roll. However, voters will appear under different categories such as “doubtful,” “logical discrepancy,” and “verification pending,” creating ambiguity about their final eligibility.
Raising serious concerns over the transparency and credibility of the process, former Chief Electoral Officer and senior administrator Jahar Sarkar questioned how a list with such a high number of unresolved cases could be termed “final.”
“A voter list with lakhs of names placed in uncertain categories cannot inspire public confidence. This may affect the integrity of the electoral process,” he remarked.
Political reactions have also intensified, with opposition parties alleging that the lack of clarity over millions of voter records could compromise free and fair elections in the state.
Election Commission officials have indicated that a window for objections and corrections will remain open even after the publication of the final list. Nevertheless, doubts persist over whether a fully accurate and comprehensive voter roll can be ensured within the given deadline.
As West Bengal prepares for upcoming elections, the controversy surrounding the voter list is expected to remain a major political and administrative issue in the days ahead.
