In a major breakthrough in the Malda Mothabari violence case, police have arrested Kolkata High Court lawyer Mofakkerul Islam from Bagdogra Airport. Investigators claim he was one of the key conspirators and was attempting to escape to Assam.
According to police sources, Mofakkerul Islam was detained on Friday morning at Bagdogra Airport while en route to Alipurduar, allegedly planning to flee further into Assam. Authorities tracked his location through mobile surveillance, leading to his swift arrest.
He has been taken to Bagdogra Police Station, where intensive interrogation is underway. Given the gravity of the case, the investigation has now been handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), whose officials have already reached Malda to take charge.
However, in a video statement, the accused has denied direct involvement in the violence. He claimed that he was merely passing through the area on his way from Kolkata to Alipurduar and had only stopped to make a public statement after witnessing the protests.
The unrest traces back to Wednesday, when protests in Sujapur led to a blockade on National Highway 12 and escalated into large-scale disruption in Mothabari. In a shocking development, seven judges associated with SIR-related work were allegedly detained by agitators, triggering nationwide concern.
The situation quickly spiraled, drawing attention from both state and central authorities and sparking outrage even in Delhi.
So far, police have arrested 18 individuals on charges of inciting violence and orchestrating unrest. Among those detained is ISF candidate Maulana Shahjahan Ali.
A court has remanded the accused to 10 days of police custody. The Supreme Court has taken serious note of the incident, issuing show-cause notices to the State Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, and the District Magistrate.
With the NIA stepping in and political tensions rising, the Mothabari violence case has now evolved into a high-stakes national investigation—one that could expose deeper networks and wider implications.
