“Bangladesh belongs to people of all faiths. We must remain united against forces trying to create division in the name of religion,” said BNP Secretary General and Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, as the annual Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath began in Dhaka on Thursday.
The festival commenced with a colourful procession organized by ISKCON Bangladesh, drawing thousands of devotees to the capital’s streets. The chariot journey started from Swamibagh Ashram and concluded at the Dhakeshwari National Temple, passing through major city routes. Nationwide, Rath Yatra celebrations are being held at 128 locations.
Earlier in the day, a discussion meeting was held at the Swamibagh Ashram auditorium, where Fakhrul attended as the chief guest. He emphasized the importance of communal harmony, recalling the spirit of unity during the 1971 Liberation War when people of all religions fought together for independence. Warning against divisive forces, he urged citizens to stay united to protect the country’s social fabric.
Devotees participated enthusiastically in the procession, pulling the chariot while chanting hymns, performing kirtan, and singing devotional songs. Streets were lined with onlookers, adding to the festive atmosphere.
The Rath Yatra rituals began in the morning with prayers for world peace and welfare. ISKCON Bangladesh has organized a nine-day programme featuring religious discussions, kirtan, and cultural events.
Security was tightened across the city, with police deployment, CCTV monitoring, and volunteer support ensuring a peaceful celebration. The festival will conclude on July 24 with the return chariot procession along the same route
